Understanding Consent in a Digital World

This Safer Internet Day we are exploring the theme of consent online, with the theme:

Our Internet, Our Choice: Understanding Consent in a Digital World

This year in the UK, Safer Internet Day will focus on how consent works in an online context and will ask young people to explore how they ask, give, and receive consent online. This could be in their friendships or relationships, how they take and share images and videos or how they manage their privacy and data.

The campaign encourages young people to explore how the internet works, who owns the information that is shared on it, and how they can actively take ownership of digital spaces. We want SID 2019 to empower young people to take control of their online lives and to feel that they can harness and use the positive power of the internet for good.

Looking at consent online with different ages:

For Safer Internet Day we have created a range of educational resources which explore how young people ask for, give and receive consent online. The Education Packs have been specifically designed to follow this theme and support educators in delivering messages about consent online. The packs talk about the issues surrounding consent in a range of ways to make them appropriate for young people ages 3-18.

To explore these themes, a range of activities will take place for Safer Internet Day:

  • Education Packs and SID TV to explore the issues children and young people face when looking at consent and permission online.
  • #ourinternetourchoice social media campaign calling on people to look at the different ways they ask and receive consent online, and pledge to create a better internet.
  • Research report into children’s experience of consent online which will be launched by the UK Safer Internet Centre on Safer Internet Day.
