Over the years, Safer Internet Day has become a landmark event in the online safety calendar. Starting as an initiative of the EU SafeBorders project in 2004 and taken up by the Insafe network as one of its earliest actions in 2005, Safer Internet Day has grown beyond its traditional geographic zone and is now celebrated in approximately 170 countries worldwide.

From cyberbullying to social networking to digital identity, each year Safer Internet Day aims to raise awareness of emerging online issues and current concerns.

Safer Internet Day in the UK

In the United Kingdom, we mark Safer Internet Day by mobilising people across the country to get “Together for a better internet” and explore how they manage their online identity, and how the internet shapes how they think of themselves and others.

Every year we create education materials for educators, parents and carers, and young people to support the day and our theme of reliability online.

We reach out to organisations across the UK to support our social campaign, to share what they are doing and show their support for the Day, as well as using our own channels to drive up engagement.

We hold a live-streamed event for policy makers and decision-makers hosted by a high-profile presenter, and featuring young people.
