Join the Childnet Youth Advisory board

23 Aug 2019 Becca Cawthorne

Launching in 2019, the new Childnet Youth Advisory Board will be working on the expansion of Project deSHAME. The Youth Advisory Board will be helping to ensure that all our resources are reflective of youth voices and young people’s experiences of being online.

The new part of the project aims to work towards online equality and to find ways to remove and prevent the online pressures and harassment young people can face. This project is centred on close collaboration with young people and there will be a brand new Youth Advisory Board in both the UK, and in partner organisations in Denmark and Hungary, who will advise and consult on the project.

We are looking for a team of 10 young people aged between 13 and 17, who:

  • Are passionate about making change.
  • Want to get their voice heard.
  • Are confident in sharing their ideas.
  • Have ideas about how we can improve the way young people experience the internet.
  • Believe change can happen both online and offline.

In the previous project we worked with a Youth Advisory Board, who had opportunities to feedback on the resources, speak at conferences about online safety and be involved in Safer Internet Day 2019.. Talking about the experience on the Youth Board they said:

“We are proud to have advised on the creation of the Step Up, Speak Up! toolkit and the Project deSHAME campaign. Through our work on the Youth Advisory Board, we play an important role in representing young people’s voices, and getting our message heard.

We are very proud of our contribution to these resources. We worked hard to make them useful, understandable and relatable. We’re determined to explain what is really going on with our generation and online sexual harassment. We hope that through our campaign we can help young people to recognise online sexual harassment does not have to be an unavoidable part of growing up. If we report it together, we can make a difference – for our generation and those following in our footsteps.”

The new Youth Advisory Board will be directly involved in planning, developing and launching a national campaign that will raise awareness of these issues and more. They will take the lead in finding solutions, and have the chance to advise parents and teachers on how we can make the internet a more inclusive and equal place.

If you, or someone you know, is up for the challenge, more information about the role and the application form can be at childnet.com/new-for-schools/youth-ambassador

Please note that this role is only available for young people aged 13-17 living in the UK.

Applications close: 5pm Friday 27th September 2019.
