Periscope is an app designed by the creators of Twitter, that lets you share and experience live video streams from your mobile or tablet device. It allows viewers to comment on the videos they see, which the person sharing the video can respond to in real time.
Safety advice
Periscope is public by default, as is the information you leave on your profile, however there are privacy settings that exist that help you control who can see your videos.
Although nudity and explicitly graphic content is forbidden on Periscope, as it is a live stream, it can be difficult to manage and prevent this type of content from being uploaded.
You may think that live videos disappear after they are posted, however it is possible to download your live streams or for other people to make recordings of your live streams. This can lead to legal copyright issues, especially if the live stream is taking place at a concert or a sporting event.
Safety tools
- Privacy: Periscope is public by default. To control who can see your live video/broadcast, you can apply privacy settings and invite the people you would like to follow your broadcast. Be aware that only ‘mutuals’ – people who you follow on Periscope and who also follow you – can see your broadcasts.
- Reporting: If you see an inappropriate video which violates Periscope’s community guidelines, you can report it, which will alert the Periscope team.
- Blocking: If another Periscope user is bothering you, you can block them as a user, or from leaving comments on your video.
