Safer Internet Day 2012

Safer Internet Day 2012 was on 7th February 2012 and reached millions across the UK

The theme was Connecting Generations with the slogan “Discovering the digital world together safely”.

Supporters

The UK Safer Internet Centre was thrilled to work in partnership with so many people and organisations across the UK. There are over 180 organisations on the Safer Internet Day Supporters page, which share the exciting range of activities that took place across the UK.

Supporters promoted Safer Internet Day through social media, on their website, in newsletters and at events. Safer Internet Day trended on Twitter in the UK and Twitter activity alone is expected to have reached 8 million people.

Youth event

To bring the theme to life, the UK Safer Internet Centre hosted a multi-generational, multi-stakeholder event in Parliament, bringing together children, young people, their parents and grandparents, plus representatives from industry, government, law enforcement, academia, charities and parenting groups. It was thrilling to have 34 primary, teen and parent/grandparent panellists and over 100 industry guests join us for this lively and engaging discussion. We also saw Safer Internet Day trending on Twitter as well as getting Prime Ministerial support for the Day. Click here to watch a film of the day and read a summary of the discussions.

Resources

The UK Safer Internet Centre produced packs for primary and secondary schools, which include quick ideas for teachers, a lesson plan and an assembly. There were over 48,000 resource downloads on the run up to Safer Internet Day 2012 and we have been delighted with the positive feedback from teachers.

Safer Internet Day Live - the internet radio programme

For the second year running, the UK Safer Internet Centre presented Safer Internet Day Live; a 12 hour marathon radio programme that took place on Safer Internet Day from 9am to 9pm and was broadcasted over the internet and around the world.A fully interactive experience, listeners were encouraged to text, email, Skype, IM and even phone in with questions to challenge the panel of experts from around the world.

For SID2012 there were over 30,000 direct listeners, 200,000 podcast downloads and 80,000 replays on BBC iPlayer!
